Listed in the ISMH, this remarkable heritage property undoubtedly ranks among the region’s most notable sites, distinguished by its history, scale, architectural quality and, above all, its exceptional authenticity.

Built in a commanding position around two courtyards, the estate extends over approximately 44.5 acres of land in one contiguous block, set within an unspoilt environment and enjoying breathtaking views over the surrounding bocage countryside.

From the road, imposing circular wrought-iron gates announce the entrance to the property. A long avenue lined with walnut trees leads to the entrance gateways, whose origins date back to the 15th century and which were probably remodelled in the 17th century.

Passing through these gateways leads into the first courtyard, where the various buildings gradually reveal themselves: outbuildings, residential quarters and other ancillary structures. Dating from the 17th century, the main residential wing is built against the rear of the château. From this courtyard, the rear façade of the former seigneurial residence appears austere, almost mysterious, pierced only by two small dormer windows and a postern gate.

A second passage leads to the property’s second courtyard, its true historic heart. Here, the seigneurial residence reveals itself in full, accompanied by further outbuildings, also dating from the 15th century.

The manor’s façade is of particular architectural interest. At its centre stands a truncated hexagonal tower, flanked by a small round tower. To the left is a typically 15th-century window. To the right, adjoining the manor, stands the chapel, a simple single-storey building opening onto the courtyard through a doorway and an ogival stained-glass window. Inside the tower, a magnificent spiral staircase serves the various levels. Lit by a window with stone seats, it culminates in a remarkable 18th-century wooden balustrade and leads, notably, to the chamber traditionally attributed to the famous Chevalier du Landreau, the last inhabitant of the house.

On each level, two principal rooms and two secondary rooms have retained an exceptional degree of authenticity. Original terracotta floor tiles, fireplaces, exposed beams and historic proportions create an interior of remarkable coherence.

Here, little or nothing has been altered or stripped of its character. It is precisely this exceptional preservation that gives the property its singular identity.

To the north, the château is connected at ground-floor level to the residential wing. This part of the property has undergone various alterations over time, particularly during its use as the farm manager’s accommodation. While it is of lesser heritage significance, it offers considerable additional residential potential and lends itself to a variety of possible projects.

Beneath the building, a staircase leads down to a vaulted underground room.

Yet it is deeper still that perhaps the most fascinating testimony to the history of the site can be found: a perfectly preserved underground refuge passage, probably more than a thousand years old and predating the château itself by many centuries, none of whose existing walls appear to date back further than the 15th century.
